All things HD are hot according to research group GFK. In fact consumers are pouring into LCD TV's Camcorders and gaming machines in big numbers to the point that 57% of the TV markert is now HD 1080p
LCD TVs by far make up the largest number of HD sales, followed by plasma TVs, games consoles, set top boxes and camcorders.
The report also found that for the third quarter running, HD sales are higher than those of non-HD models, representing two-thirds of all combined sales.
Prices for HD models continue to be significantly higher than non-HD models, however for all categories apart from games consoles and set top boxes, the price difference between HD and non-HD was reduced from last quarter. GfK says consumers are recognising HD as a superior quality and are willing to pay a premium price for it.
See below for the full report spanning all categories.
High Definition Market Overview
High Definition commands over two-thirds of market value
Two years ago, in Q1 2005, HD products represented just 22% ($88.4m) of total sales, but that proportion has increased and now represents over two-thirds (67% or $520.2m)1 of the total sales of $771.3m for Q1 2007.
The introduction of high definition products continues to accelerate spending in the home entertainment electronics market. Total sales (including HD and non-HD models) for the product categories covered in The Benchmark jumped from $685.8m in Q1 2006 to $771.3m in Q1 2007, a 12% increase. Over that period, HD products' sales values increased by 80%, whilst non-HD product sales values decreased by 37%.
1 Note: The above chart excludes notebook PC sales ($1.1m). Notebooks are included in other charts but excluded here because their inclusion would distort historical comparison going back to Q1 2005 (the beginning of The Benchmark's reporting period). The Q4 report is the first in which the notebook PC category is included.
