Sony recently showed off a new loudspeaker concept that utilizes a combination of traditional drivers and a vibrating tube to create a full range, omidirectional sound image. The low range is handled by a driver housed in a tubular enclosure at the bottom of the unit. The mids are pumped through a downward facing driver, which reverberates its sound off of four metal poles in the middle of the device. The high-end is transmitted through an oscillating metal string that causes the glass tube to vibrate, which in turn emits the sound into the room in all directions. This elegant design is just a concept at this point, but if it sounds a good as it looks, I’m sold. Although I’m not holding my breath, after all it is Sony.
