As the digital switchover draws ever nearer, UK shoppers seem to have been going mad for new TVs in the run up to Christmas.
Apparently sales of small, flat screen digital TVs in December have increased by a huge 287% on the same period last year – with sales far outstripping those of larger TVs, surprisingly.
The figures, supplied by Tesco, apparently show that families are replacing second TVs in kitchens and bedrooms in readiness for the switchover to digital broadcasting, and also that parents are replacing chunky old CRT TVs in their kids’ bedrooms with space-saving flat models.
What’s more, Tesco expects what it calls ‘Second Telly Syndrome’ to continue beyond the Christmas period. Don’t forget, after all, that Whitehaven in Cumbria has already become the first area to have its analogue signal completely deactivated (as of last October), and this is going to be followed by the Borders, Granada and West Country regions over the next two years.
