Do you remember how Microsoft doesn’t like Blu-ray?
"We firmly stand behind the HD DVD format as the best choice for consumers. Current reports indicating that Microsoft has a back-up plan, which includes Blu-ray support are incorrect. We’re fully committed to HD DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats."
Admittedly, that was back in May 2007 and a lot has changed since then.
The latest stance, as if we’re surprised, is that Microsoft would consider adopting Blu-ray for the Xbox 360 should consumers choose the format and cause it to "win".
Xbox group marketing manager, Albert Penello, has been quoted as saying their support " should be consumer choice, and if that’s the way they vote, that’s something we’ll have to consider."
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Blu-ray — and you wouldn’t really expect it while things are still shifting around after Warner’s pre-CES announcement — but unsurprising that Microsoft would go with the consumer’s choice.
It will be interesting to see if and when Microsoft take the decision to support Blu-ray, as that will effectively send the message that they believe the format has unassailable market share.
