According to an article in The Guardian, 3D HTV could be with us in the next couple of years.
Philips and several other companies have been developing new 3D technologies that make it seem as if the viewer is surrounded by high-definition objects. And, unlike in the past, viewers won’t need to wear strange spectacles.
Although the prototype Philips model would cost in the region of £10,000 due its complexity, the price should fall substantially before reaching the market.
Orange has also been working with 3D technology and explained that the technology works by sending different images to each eye so that one eye receives one while the other gets a separate one, creating a three-dimensional appearance.
While the technology is advancing rapidly, there are only two 3D films in production by uber directors James Cameron and Steven Spielberg – both are expected to release in 2009.
